Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Cedar City and Kanab
A compassionate approach to understanding the different parts of yourself, and helping them work together instead of against each other.
How We Help
IFS is based on the idea that we all have different parts inside us, like a part that’s anxious, a part that’s self-critical, or a part that avoids difficult feelings. These parts aren’t flaws to eliminate; they developed for a reason and are trying to help, even when their strategies aren’t working anymore.
In IFS, we work to understand each part with curiosity rather than judgment, and help you access your core Self, the calm, compassionate center that can lead your internal system rather than being run by it.

IFS was developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz and has since become widely used for trauma, anxiety, and relationship patterns. Rather than trying to get rid of difficult parts of yourself, IFS helps you build a different relationship with them, understanding what each part is protecting you from and what it actually needs.
A Few Ways We Can Help
Trauma & Difficult Experiences
IFS is often used alongside trauma therapy to help parts of you that are still holding onto difficult experiences.
Family Patterns
IFS can help you understand family dynamics, including how they show up in your relationship with your own children.
Self-Criticism & Inner Conflict
If you notice a harsh inner critic or feel pulled in different directions internally, IFS offers a way to work with those parts directly.

Why Choose IFS at A Mindful Life Counseling
IFS meets every part of you with curiosity, not judgment, including the parts that feel hardest to accept.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are parts in IFS?
Parts are the different aspects of your personality, like a part that worries, a part that people-pleases, or a part that shuts down under stress. IFS sees these as valid pieces of you, not something wrong with you.
What is the Self in Internal Family Systems?
Self is described as the calm, curious, compassionate core beneath all your parts. A goal of IFS is helping your Self lead your internal system rather than being taken over by any one part.
Is IFS the same as talking to my inner child?
It’s related but broader. IFS works with all kinds of parts, not just younger or wounded ones, including protective parts that may seem harsh or unhelpful on the surface.
What can IFS help with?
IFS is used for trauma, anxiety, depression, self-criticism, relationship patterns, and family dynamics, among other concerns.
